Week 1
Introduction — The Pocket Prayer
Read the Introduction of Before Amen by Max Lucado. Key passages: Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:1-4.
1.Lucado begins by admitting that prayer can feel intimidating even for experienced Christians. Have you ever felt that way? What has made prayer feel difficult or complicated for you?
2.The book's central tool is a simple "pocket prayer": Father, you are good. I need help. They need help. Thank you. In Jesus' name, amen. What is your first reaction to this prayer?
a.Does it feel too simple, or refreshingly simple? Why?
b.Which phrase stands out to you most at this early stage?
3.Lucado draws on the disciples' request, "Lord, teach us to pray" (Luke 11:1). Why do you think grown adults — people who had walked with Jesus — still felt they needed to be taught? What does that say about prayer as a learnable practice rather than an innate gift?
