Week 1
Introduction — The Language We've Lost
Read the Introduction of Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy. Primary passages: Psalm 22:1–2; Lamentations 1:1–3.
1.Vroegop opens the book with the story of his own devastating losses, including multiple miscarriages. How did his personal vulnerability in sharing these stories affect you as a reader? Did it invite you in or make you uncomfortable — and what does that reaction reveal about your own relationship with grief?
2.Vroegop defines lament as "a prayer in pain that leads to trust." Unpack each part of that definition.
a.What makes lament a prayer, as opposed to simply venting or complaining?
b.Why is pain a necessary element — can you lament something that doesn't truly hurt?
c.What is the significance of trust as the destination? What would lament look like if it didn't move toward trust?
3.The author observes that nearly one-third of the Psalms are laments, yet lament psalms are rarely sung in contemporary Christian worship. Why do you think the church has moved away from this language? What does the church gain — and what does it lose — with this shift?
