Week 1
Introduction — A Prophet for Such a Time as This
Read the Introduction of Elijah by Priscilla Shirer. Primary Scripture: 1 Kings 16:29–34; James 5:17–18.
1.Priscilla Shirer opens by describing the cultural and spiritual climate of Elijah's day — a nation that had not abandoned religion altogether but had simply added Baal to the mix. How does 1 Kings 16 describe King Ahab's reign, and what made it uniquely dangerous compared to the kings before him?
2.Shirer draws a direct line between ancient Israel's spiritual compromise and modern culture's spiritual landscape. What parallels do you see between the pressure Israel faced to accommodate Baal worship and the pressures Christians face today to soften or blend their faith with prevailing cultural values?
3.James 5:17 describes Elijah as "a man with a nature like ours" — ordinary, prone to fear and discouragement. Why do you think it matters that the Holy Spirit inspired James to include that detail? What does it say about what God is willing to do through ordinary people?
