Week 1
Preface & Introduction — "A Way of Seeing"
Read the Preface and Introduction of One Thousand Gifts. Key Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; John 10:10.
1.Voskamp opens with the death of her baby sister, struck by a delivery truck in the family farmyard. How does she describe the way that early grief shaped her relationship with God and with joy? What emotions or doubts did it plant in her?
2.A friend's casual dare — "Name one thousand things you love" — becomes the catalyst for the whole book. Why do you think such a simple exercise could be so disruptive to a person's spiritual life?
3.Voskamp introduces the Greek word *eucharisteo* (thanksgiving) and shows that it contains the words *charis* (grace) and *chara* (joy). In her own words, "joy is always a function of gratitude." Do you find that equation convincing from your own experience? Why or why not?
