Week 1
Introduction — Our Search for Significance
Read the Introduction of The Search for Significance. Key Scripture: Psalm 139:13-16; John 10:10.
1.McGee opens by describing the "performance treadmill" — the relentless effort to feel good about ourselves by doing more, being more, and achieving more. Can you recognize this treadmill in your own life? What does it look like for you on a typical day or week?
2.McGee argues that the question of personal significance is not a shallow psychological concern but a deeply spiritual one. Why do you think so many Christians still feel empty or driven despite believing in God? What gap exists between what they profess and what they feel?
3.McGee identifies two lies at the root of most emotional pain: "I must meet certain standards to feel good about myself" and "I must be approved of by certain others to feel good about myself." Which of these two tends to be your stronger pull, and why?
a.Can you think of a specific situation this past month where one of these two lies drove your behavior or your mood?
b.What emotion do you most commonly feel when you fail to meet the standard or lose the approval — shame, fear, anger, or something else?
