Anxious for Nothing by Max Lucado

Week 5: Chapter 4 — Meditate on Good Things

Read Chapter 4 of Anxious for Nothing. Primary Scripture: Philippians 4:8.

The final movement of CALM is Meditate — deliberately directing the mind toward what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. This chapter is a practical guide to the most underused tool in the Christian's mental toolbox.

Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.Philippians 4:8 is one of the most specific verses in the New Testament about what to think about. Walk through the list — true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy. Which of these eight qualities feels most neglected in your current thought life? Which feels most natural?

2.Lucado argues that anxiety is as much a thinking problem as it is a feeling problem — that anxious feelings are downstream of anxious thoughts. Do you agree? How have you seen the connection between habitual thought patterns and your emotional state?

3.Lucado uses the metaphor of the mind as a garden — what you cultivate grows, and what you neglect to weed will eventually take over. What 'weeds' (recurring anxious or negative thought patterns) do you need to identify and pull in your own mental garden?
