This chapter confronts us with the one truth we most instinctively avoid: our lives are fragile, brief, and not our own. Read it slowly, and let it do its uncomfortable work.

1.The title "You Might Not Finish This Chapter" is a deliberate jolt. How did you feel reading it? Did it strike you as gimmicky, or did it land with genuine weight? Why?

2.Chan uses the image of our lives as a "vapor" or a "mist" — here and then gone. How does the brevity and fragility of life change the urgency of his message? How does it change the urgency of your own daily choices?

3.Jesus tells the parable of the Rich Fool in Luke 12, a man who builds bigger barns and plans for a long, comfortable future — only to have his soul required of him that very night. Chan invokes this parable to ask: what "barns" are you building? What are you planning for and hoarding that assumes you have unlimited time?

a.What would you do differently this week if you genuinely believed your time was short?

b.Are there conversations, acts of generosity, or commitments to God that you have been postponing?

4.Chan argues that most of us live as though we are the main character in our own story, with God playing a supporting role. How does the reality of our mortality expose that illusion? What does it feel like to sit with the idea that your story is a small part of His?

5.The chapter asks whether we are truly living for eternity or just paying it lip service. What is the difference between someone who intellectually believes in eternity and someone who is actually living in light of it? Which one describes you more honestly?

Lord, we confess that we live most days as though we have endless time — as though the future is ours to plan and control. Forgive us for the barns we build in our hearts. Remind us today that our breath is in Your hands, that our days are written by You, and that not one moment is guaranteed. Let the brevity of life not paralyze us with fear but free us from the trivial things that steal our attention from You and from the people You've placed in our lives. We want to number our days, and so gain a heart of wisdom. Amen.
