Forgotten God by Francis Chan
Week 8: Chapter 7 — Supernatural Church
Read Chapter 7 of Forgotten God by Francis Chan. Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:1–11; Acts 4:29–31; Romans 12:4–8.
Chan's final chapter expands the lens from the individual to the community — because the Spirit was not given only to individuals but to the church as a whole, and a Spirit-filled community is one of the most compelling witnesses to a watching world.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Chan describes what he calls a 'supernatural church' — a community that cannot be explained apart from the work of the Holy Spirit, where unity, love, giftedness, and bold witness go beyond what human effort or organizational skill can produce. Have you ever experienced a community like that, even briefly? What made it different?
2.1 Corinthians 12 describes the church as a body where the Spirit distributes gifts as He sees fit — not for personal prestige but for the common good. How does your church community actually function in terms of shared giftedness? Are most people functioning as active, Spirit-gifted members or as passive consumers?
3.Chan argues that the 'attractional' model of church — where the goal is to attract outsiders with excellence, entertainment, and programs — can actually replace rather than display the Spirit's work. Do you agree? What would a church look like that relied more on the Spirit's power than on production quality?
a.What gifts, programs, or structures in your own church might be substitutes for Spirit-dependence rather than expressions of it?
b.What would it cost your church to strip away some of those things and depend more explicitly on the Spirit?
