Before Much-Afraid takes her first step, she must first hear the Shepherd's call — and so must we. Take a moment to quiet your heart and consider what drew you to this book.

Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.The publisher's introduction suggests that the reader already senses God drawing her nearer. What does it mean to you personally to feel that 'drawing'? Have you experienced a season like that recently?

2.The allegory centers on a character named Much-Afraid. What does it communicate about the Christian life that Hurnard chose fear — not wickedness or rebellion — as Much-Afraid's defining struggle?

3.Habakkuk 3:19 speaks of God making our feet 'like hinds' feet' to walk on high places. What do you think it means spiritually to have 'hinds' feet'? What would those feet allow you to do that you currently cannot?

4.Much-Afraid lives in the Valley of Humiliation, surrounded by her Fearing relatives — Craven Fear, Bitterness, Self-Pity, and others. Which of these 'relatives' feels most familiar to you? Why?

5.The devotional is described as helping readers 'understand your own struggles and regain confidence in your walk with the Lord.' What is one specific struggle you are hoping this study will help you understand more clearly?

6.The allegory is written specifically to accompany the full Hurnard text. Why do you think an allegory — a story with symbolic characters — can sometimes reach places in our hearts that straightforward teaching cannot?

a.Can you think of another story, film, or parable that has shaped your spiritual understanding in a deep way?

b.What does that tell you about how God uses imagination and story?

7.The Shepherd beckons Much-Afraid to the High Places even though she is crippled and afraid. How does this image challenge or comfort you in light of how you see your own spiritual condition right now?

8.The introduction promises the devotional will help 'satisfy the yearning of your heart.' What do you think is the deepest spiritual yearning in you right now — and how do you hope this journey addresses it?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, like Much-Afraid I hear You calling me toward the High Places, and I confess that I am not sure I am ready for the climb. My feet feel weak and my heart feels fearful. Thank You that You do not call the confident and the capable alone — You call the limping, the trembling, and the uncertain too. As I begin this journey through this devotional, satisfy the aching yearning in my heart for more of Your presence. Teach me to say 'yes' to You even when I do not understand the way. Amen.
