Unforgiveness may be the stronghold that imprisons us the most quietly — it wraps itself in the language of justice while eating us alive from the inside.

Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.Moore describes unforgiveness and bitterness as a stronghold that harms the person holding it far more than the person who caused the original offense. Do you agree with this? Have you experienced the physical, emotional, or spiritual weight of carrying unforgiveness?

2.In Jesus' parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:21–35), a man forgiven an enormous debt refuses to forgive a small one and is then handed over to the 'jailers' (or 'tormentors'). Moore connects this directly to the inner torment of unforgiveness as a self-imposed prison. What does the parable say about the relationship between receiving forgiveness and giving it?

3.Hebrews 12:15 warns us to 'see to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.' The image of a root is important — bitterness starts small and underground. How can you detect a bitter root in your heart before it grows into a tree that 'defiles many'?
