Before we can fight something, we have to be willing to name it. This week, Beth invites us to stop politely ignoring the insecurity in the room and look it squarely in the face.

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.Beth opens the book with striking honesty about her own struggle with insecurity, even as a well-known Bible teacher. What was your initial reaction to her vulnerability? Did it surprise you, or did it feel like relief?

2.She argues that insecurity is epidemic among women — that it is not a personality quirk or a season of life, but a pervasive condition that crosses age, background, and even faith. Do you agree with that diagnosis? What evidence do you see in your own circles?

3.Beth distinguishes between a healthy, appropriate concern for how we are doing in life and a toxic, destabilizing insecurity. In your own words, how would you describe the difference?

4.She suggests that many women are so accustomed to insecurity that they have stopped recognizing it — it simply feels like "being a woman." Where have you normalized insecurity in your own life without ever questioning it?

5.The introduction frames the entire book as a journey toward freedom, not just coping. What does genuine freedom from insecurity look like to you? Can you picture it for yourself?

6.Psalm 62:5-8 calls God a rock, a salvation, and a fortress, and urges the reader to pour out their heart to Him. How does the image of God as a fortress speak to the problem of insecurity specifically?

7.What is one area of your life — a relationship, a role, your appearance, your achievements — where you most want to experience security by the end of this study? Share it with your group if you are comfortable.

Closing Prayer

Lord, we begin this journey by admitting what we have been reluctant to say out loud: we are not as secure as we have pretended to be. Like Beth, we have smiled our way through moments that shook us to the core. You are our rock and our fortress — not just a comforting phrase, but a reality we desperately need. Teach us, over these coming weeks, to stop looking to the shifting ground of other people's approval and circumstances, and to plant ourselves in You. We pour out our hearts to You now — the fear, the comparison, the shame. Receive it all. Amen.
