If the previous chapter established that God is not absent in suffering, this chapter presses the harder question: can we actually trust Him when we cannot see what He is doing? Elliot's answer is unflinching.

Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.Elliot argues that trust is not the same as understanding — that we can (and must) trust God even when we cannot comprehend His purposes. How does she distinguish between the two? Do you find that distinction helpful or frustrating?

2.She uses the image of a cup — the cup God is offering — as a central metaphor for suffering received in trust. Where does that image come from in Scripture? What does it add to her argument that suffering is purposeful?

3.Elliot's famous statement appears in this context: 'Whatever is in the cup that God is offering to me, whether it be pain and sorrow and suffering and grief along with the many more joys, I'm willing to take it because I trust Him.' What is the most challenging word in that sentence for you personally? Why?

a.Notice she says 'I'm willing to take it' — not 'I enjoy it' or 'I understand it.' What is the difference between willingness and enjoyment in the context of suffering?

b.Is there something in your cup right now that you are not yet willing to receive? What would it take to get to willingness?
