The final chapters of The Imitation press the reader to bring everything — self-examination, burning desire, and total surrender — to the Table of Christ, and to leave as a more faithful imitator of the One they have received.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Chapter VII calls for 'examination of conscience and purpose of amendment' before receiving Communion. Thomas suggests examining our relationships, our secret sins, and our dominant failures. This is not meant to produce paralysis but honesty. What would honest self-examination before a serious reception of Communion actually look like for you right now? What would you confess?
2.Chapter XI draws a remarkable parallel: 'The Body and Blood of Christ and the Holy Scriptures are most necessary to a faithful soul.' Thomas says both the word and the table are Christ's gifts for the journey, and that to neglect either is spiritual harm. How do word and sacrament function together in your own spiritual nourishment? Does one tend to crowd out the other?
3.Chapter XIV recounts the yearning of ancient saints who desired Communion so intensely that, unable to receive the Sacrament, they would nevertheless 'kiss the ground where the priest stood' in their longing. Thomas is not recommending that practice but describing the quality of desire — a hunger for Christ so real it expressed itself physically. What does your desire for Christ's presence actually feel like? What would it look like to cultivate more of it?
