Week 1
Introduction — The Rat Race
Read the Introduction of The Man in the Mirror. Key passages: Ecclesiastes 1:1–11; Matthew 16:26.
1.Morley describes the modern man as caught in a 'rat race' — a relentless pursuit of success that never quite delivers what it promises. Be honest: in what areas of your own life do you feel like you're running hard without knowing exactly where the finish line is?
2.The title image — a man looking at himself in the mirror — is a metaphor for honest self-examination. What do you think you would see if you looked at your inner life as clearly as you see your face each morning?
3.Morley argues that many men live lives of 'quiet desperation,' borrowing the phrase to describe men who are outwardly fine but inwardly restless. Do you recognize this pattern in yourself or in men around you? What keeps men from naming it out loud?
