Kit Tyler steps off the Dolphin into a world utterly unlike the one she has known — take a moment to notice how Speare establishes both her character and her conflict in these opening pages.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.The novel opens aboard the Dolphin, the ship bringing Kit to Connecticut Colony. What does Kit do that immediately marks her as an outsider — even before she sets foot on shore — and how do the other passengers react?
a.Why is her ability to swim seen as suspicious rather than impressive?
b.What does this early incident tell us about the Puritan world she is entering?
2.Kit's first sight of the Connecticut shore is described as cold and bleak compared to Barbados. How does Speare use the landscape itself to reflect Kit's emotional state and foreshadow the conflict ahead?
3.On the ship Kit meets John Holbrook, Goodwife Cruff, and her daughter Prudence, as well as Captain Talcott and young Nat Eaton. What initial impressions do you form of each of these characters, and which relationships seem likely to matter most?
