7 questions1.Hebrews 11 lists the heroes of faith and ends with those who 'did not receive what was promised' — yet are commended for their faith. How does Elliot's account fit within that tradition? In what sense did these five men 'not receive what was promised' in earthly terms, and in what sense did they receive everything?
2.Elliot is careful throughout the book not to make the men into myths. She includes their doubts, their humor, their ordinary moments. Why is that honesty so important for the book's argument? What would be lost if she had only shown their heroism?
3.Jesus says in John 15:13 that 'greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.' These men died for people who were, at that moment, still enemies. How does that complicate or deepen Jesus' words?
