Keller opens by naming what every honest person already knows: suffering is the great challenge to faith, and no worldview escapes its force. Take a moment before you begin to consider what questions you are bringing with you into this study.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Keller describes suffering as "the great challenge to Christian faith" and argues that it is also the great challenge to every other worldview. Why do you think suffering feels so destabilizing — not just emotionally, but philosophically and spiritually?
2.Before reading this book, how would you have described your own default response to pain and suffering — whether your own or others'? Where did that response come from (upbringing, culture, past experience, faith tradition)?
3.Keller notes that secular Western culture tends to see suffering as an interruption to normal life — something to be fixed or escaped as quickly as possible. How have you seen this assumption at work around you, perhaps even in yourself?
4.The introduction sets up the book's three-part structure: understanding suffering (the secular and religious landscape), the theology of suffering (what God is doing), and the practice of suffering (how to walk through it). Which of these three movements do you most need right now, and why?
a.Which part do you expect will be the most difficult to engage honestly?
b.Which part do you suspect will surprise you most?
5.Keller contrasts two inadequate responses to suffering: denial ("it's not that bad") and despair ("there's no meaning in it at all"). Have you tended more toward one of these poles? What has that cost you?
6.Keller writes with both academic rigor and pastoral warmth, drawing on his decades of ministry in New York City. What drew you to this particular book on this particular subject? What are you hoping to find?
7.How does the Christian claim — that God himself entered suffering in Jesus — begin to reframe the question of why suffering exists? Even at this early stage, does that claim feel like a satisfying answer, a beginning of an answer, or no answer at all?
Closing Prayer
Lord, we come to this study carrying questions — some of them old and aching, some of them fresh and raw. We confess that we often either minimize suffering to make it more manageable or sink into despair because it feels meaningless. As we begin this journey, give us the courage to look honestly at the darkness, the faith to believe you are present in it, and the hope that you will guide us through it. We pray this in the name of Jesus, who is no stranger to pain. Amen.
