After his bold declaration, God immediately sends Elijah not to a stage but to a brook — and the question this session asks is whether we can trust God when His provision looks nothing like what we expected.

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.God's instructions to Elijah after his Mount Carmel-like declaration were startling: go hide at the Kerith Brook, and ravens will bring you food. Shirer notes that Elijah could have argued — ravens are unclean birds, the brook is obscure, and hiding feels like the opposite of the mission. What does Elijah's immediate obedience in 1 Kings 17:5 reveal about the relationship between obedience and trust?

2.Shirer uses the Kerith Brook experience to develop the theme of hiddenness — seasons where God tucks us away from public visibility to deepen private dependence. Have you experienced a Kerith Brook season in your own life? What did God seem to be doing in you during that time of obscurity or limitation?

3.The brook eventually dries up (1 Kings 17:7). Shirer does not gloss over this detail — she points out that God allowed the very provision He had arranged to run out, because the next provision was already prepared. How does the drying up of the brook challenge your understanding of God's faithfulness? Is it possible that a provision drying up is itself a sign of God's guidance rather than His absence?

a.What "brook" in your own life has dried up recently — a relationship, a job, a ministry role, a sense of direction?

b.What might God be moving you toward as a result?
