Week 6: Session 5 — Burnout

1.Immediately after the fire falls at Carmel, Elijah prays for rain, then runs ahead of Ahab's chariot in supernatural power. And then — within hours — Jezebel's single threatening message causes him to flee in terror. Shirer does not minimize this collapse; she acknowledges that the most severe spiritual, emotional, and physical crashes often follow our greatest victories. Have you experienced this pattern? What does it reveal about our humanity and our need for God even in seasons of "winning"?

2.Elijah runs to Beersheba, leaves his servant behind, walks a day's journey into the wilderness, and asks to die under a juniper tree: "I have had enough, LORD" (1 Kings 19:4). Shirer treats this as a genuine crisis — depression, exhaustion, and isolation all rolled together. What does God's response reveal about how He views His burned-out servants? Does His response surprise you?

3.Shirer highlights the angel's provision for Elijah — food, water, rest, and more food — before any spiritual conversation takes place. She makes the point that God sometimes addresses the body before addressing the soul. How does this challenge the tendency in Christian culture to spiritualize every problem and skip straight to Bible verses when someone is exhausted, grieving, or overwhelmed?
