This chapter is the theological heart of the book's third movement: how the gospel of grace — not merely better motivations or moral willpower — actually transforms the way we work.

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.Keller argues that the gospel changes not just why we work but how we work — the actual texture and quality of our daily labor. What does he mean by that, and do you find it convincing that theological beliefs can reach that deep?

2.The chapter explores the way grace — being loved unconditionally, before we achieve anything — frees us from both the drive to overwork (to earn our significance) and the temptation to underwork (to avoid the risk of failure). Which of these two liberations do you need more?

3.Keller describes Christians who have the same theology but whose work looks virtually indistinguishable from their non-Christian colleagues — just as anxious, just as competitive, just as driven by recognition. Why does knowing the gospel intellectually fail to transform our work, and what is the difference between head-knowledge and heart-knowledge of grace?

a.Can you identify a specific area of your work life where you know the right theological answer but your gut-level response is still driven by fear or pride?

b.What spiritual practices or habits might help the gospel travel from your head to your work habits?
