Week 1: Introduction — The Story Behind the Story

1.Francine Rivers explains in her author's note that Hosea was the book that transformed her own faith. What drew her to retell it as a Gold Rush–era novel? What does the frontier setting add to the story that ancient Israel might not?

2.Read Hosea 1–3 before beginning the novel. God instructs Hosea to marry a woman he knows will be unfaithful. What does this command tell you about the kind of God the Bible presents? Does it make you uncomfortable? Why or why not?

3.Angel's story begins in profound darkness — she is sold into prostitution as a very young child, and the novel does not flinch from the horror of that. Why do you think Rivers chose not to soften or skip over Angel's early trauma?

4.Angel has learned to survive by shutting down emotionally and seeing herself as a commodity. She refers to herself in ways that reflect how others have defined her. How do the labels others place on us shape our sense of identity — and how hard is it to shed them?

5.The novel's setting — Pair-a-Dice, a Gold Rush mining camp — is deliberately named. What does that name suggest about the values and promises of the world Angel lives in? How does it contrast with what Michael represents?

6.When Michael first sees Angel, he hears God tell him she is to be his wife. He is shaken and resistant at first, but he obeys. What does his initial obedience cost him, and what does it reveal about his character at this early stage?

7.In Hosea 2:14–15, God says he will 'allure' his unfaithful people into the wilderness and 'speak tenderly' to them there. How does this passage foreshadow what will happen between Michael and Angel on the farm? What does it suggest about how God often works — through stripping away rather than adding?
