Week 1: Session 1 — The Beginning

3.Genesis 1 opens with God speaking creation into existence — light, sky, sea, land, and living creatures — and calling it 'good.' What does the act of speaking creation into being reveal about the nature and character of God? How does John 1:1–5 deepen your understanding of who was present at creation?

4.The creation of humanity in Genesis 1–2 is distinct from everything else God made — humans alone are made in the imago Dei, the image of God. What does it mean to bear God's image? How should that truth shape the way you see yourself and the people around you?

5.The Fall in Genesis 3 is the pivot point that makes the rest of the Bible necessary. How does the serpent's strategy in the garden — questioning God's word and God's goodness — mirror the temptations you face today? Where do you find yourself most susceptible to doubting God's goodness?

6.Even in the middle of pronouncing consequences in Genesis 3:15, God makes a promise — often called the protoevangelium, or 'first gospel' — that the offspring of the woman will crush the serpent's head. Why is it significant that the very first response to human sin is a promise of rescue? What does this tell you about God's posture toward people who fail?

7.Angie emphasizes that understanding the beginning of the story is essential for understanding everything that follows. As you embark on this seven-week journey, what is one specific thing you are hoping God will clarify or settle in your understanding of the Bible?

8.How does seeing Creation, the Fall, and the first promise of a Redeemer all in the opening chapters of Genesis set the stage for the gospel of Jesus Christ? In what sense is the entire Bible already present in seed form in Genesis 1–3?
