Before diving into the false beliefs that drive us, this week we pause to ask the foundational question: where have we been looking for our sense of worth, and why has that search left us exhausted?

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.McGee opens by describing the "performance treadmill" — the relentless effort to feel good about ourselves by doing more, being more, and achieving more. Can you recognize this treadmill in your own life? What does it look like for you on a typical day or week?

2.McGee argues that the question of personal significance is not a shallow psychological concern but a deeply spiritual one. Why do you think so many Christians still feel empty or driven despite believing in God? What gap exists between what they profess and what they feel?

3.McGee identifies two lies at the root of most emotional pain: "I must meet certain standards to feel good about myself" and "I must be approved of by certain others to feel good about myself." Which of these two tends to be your stronger pull, and why?

a.Can you think of a specific situation this past month where one of these two lies drove your behavior or your mood?

b.What emotion do you most commonly feel when you fail to meet the standard or lose the approval — shame, fear, anger, or something else?

4.The introduction sets up a contrast between a self-worth built on circumstances and performance versus one built on what God says is true. In your own words, why is a performance-based identity so unstable? What does it feel like when the performance stops or fails?

5.McGee suggests that many people have never seriously examined the beliefs that drive their emotions and behaviors — they simply react. What would it mean for you personally to stop and examine the beliefs underneath your emotional patterns? Does that feel threatening or freeing, and why?

6.Psalm 139 tells us we are fearfully and wonderfully made and known completely by God. John 10:10 promises life "to the full." How far does your lived experience feel from those promises right now? What do you think is standing in the way?

7.McGee frames the entire book as an effort to replace destructive false beliefs with the liberating truths of the gospel. How does this connect to what Paul says in Romans 12:2 about being "transformed by the renewing of your mind"? What does that transformation actually require in practice?

Closing Prayer

Lord, we confess that we have been running on a treadmill of our own making, striving to feel significant through what we do and who approves of us. We are tired. We come to this study asking You to do what only You can do — to reach into the beliefs we have held for years and replace them with Your truth. Thank You that You know us completely, as Psalm 139 promises, and that You still call us beloved. Give us the courage to be honest with ourselves and with each other in the weeks ahead. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
