Beneath the surface of nearly every man's life runs a single, haunting question — 'Do I have what it takes?' — and this chapter traces where that question comes from and who is meant to answer it.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Eldredge identifies 'Do I have what it takes?' as the question every man is asking, consciously or not. In what areas of your life do you feel that question most acutely — vocation, fatherhood, marriage, friendships, your relationship with God?
2.He argues that this question is meant to be answered by a father — and that most men are living with a wound because that answer was never clearly given, or was given in the negative. How would you describe the message you received from your father (or father figure) about whether you had what it takes?
3.Eldredge points to Jesus's baptism, where the Father speaks from heaven: 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased' — before Jesus has performed a single miracle. What does it mean that the Father's affirmation came before the performance? What would it mean for that to be true of you?
a.How much of your striving — in work, ministry, fitness, achievement — is driven by trying to earn an affirmation you already need?
b.How would your daily life look different if you were operating from a settled 'Yes' rather than trying to earn one?
