Groeschel moves from the mechanism of thought change to the source of our most damaging thoughts — the lies of the enemy. These chapters ask us to trace our thought patterns back to their root, which takes courage.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Groeschel describes the enemy as "a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44) and traces the strategy of deception all the way back to the garden in Genesis 3. He notes that Satan's first recorded words in Scripture are a question designed to create doubt: "Did God really say...?" Where in your life do you hear that whisper most loudly — the question that plants doubt about what God has said?
2.He identifies several common categories of lies people believe — lies about their worth, their future, God's goodness, and whether change is possible. Which category hits closest to home for you, and why?
3.Groeschel makes the point that lies become powerful not when they are outrageous but when they are plausible — when they are mixed with just enough truth to feel believable. Think of a lie you have believed for a long time. What grain of truth was mixed into it that made it so sticky?
a.How long did you carry that lie before you recognized it as a lie?
b.What finally allowed you to see it more clearly?
