Groeschel now gets very practical, helping us identify the specific triggers — people, places, memories, and circumstances — that send our minds down destructive paths. Self-awareness is the beginning of freedom.

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.Groeschel describes a "trigger" as anything — a smell, a song, a person, a location, a time of day — that automatically activates a negative thought spiral. What are two or three triggers you can identify in your own life that reliably send your mind somewhere unhealthy?

2.He explains that triggers work because they are connected to stored memories and emotions — the brain detects a familiar pattern and fires the associated thought before you have time to think about it. Does knowing the neuroscience behind your triggers make them feel more manageable or more daunting? Why?

3.Groeschel draws on James 1:14–15 — "each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." He argues that our triggers are the point at which that "dragging away" begins. What does it mean to interrupt the cycle at the trigger point rather than waiting until the thought is already in full motion?

a.Think of a specific destructive thought pattern in your life. Where in the sequence does it typically become hardest to stop?

b.What would it look like to interrupt it earlier in the chain?
