Before diving into Moore's framework, take a moment to consider honestly: are you actually living in the freedom Christ promises, or have you grown so accustomed to certain chains that you've forgotten they're there?

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.Moore opens with a striking observation: many Christians are saved but not free — they have a ticket out of Egypt but are still living as though they're in Pharaoh's household. Does that image resonate with your own experience? Why or why not?

2.She defines a 'stronghold' as a negative thinking pattern so deeply embedded in our minds that it influences how we see God, ourselves, and others. In your own words, what is the difference between a sin struggle and a stronghold?

3.Moore introduces the five 'benefits of covenant relationship' that captivity steals. List the five benefits from the introduction.

a.Which of these five feels most distant or elusive in your own walk with God right now?

b.Which feels most present? What do you think accounts for the difference?

4.Why do you think Moore chose the book of Isaiah as the primary lens for a study about Christian freedom? What does Isaiah's context — addressing a nation heading toward (and then living through) captivity — offer that a New Testament epistle about freedom might not?

5.Moore is candid in the introduction about her own battles with spiritual bondage. How does a leader's vulnerability about her own struggles affect your trust in her guidance? Is personal testimony a strength or a distraction in a Bible study like this?

6.John 8:36 says, 'If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.' If this is already true of every believer, why does Moore argue that we still need to pursue and appropriate that freedom? How do you hold those two truths together?

7.What do you hope God will do in your life specifically through this study? Write it down and share it with your group if you're comfortable. Consider returning to it at the end of the book.

Closing Prayer

Lord, we come to You at the beginning of this journey aware that freedom is a word we often use but rarely inhabit fully. You have declared through Isaiah that You came to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and to open the prison to those who are bound. We confess that we have sometimes grown comfortable in our captivity — even preferred it to the vulnerability of genuine freedom. Give us courage to look honestly at the strongholds in our lives. Remind us that You are not surprised by what we find, and that the price of our freedom has already been paid. We ask You to do something real in us over these weeks — not just to inform our minds but to break actual chains. We trust You to do it. Amen.
