Before diving into Cloud's four tasks of growth, it helps to understand the gap he is trying to close — the distance between who God designed us to be and who we have become through pain and sin.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Cloud opens by describing the gap many Christians feel — they believe the right things but don't experience the freedom, love, and joy those beliefs should produce. How honestly does that description match your own experience? Where is the gap most noticeable in your life?
2.Cloud frames the entire book around the idea that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27) and that healing means recovering and developing that image. What aspects of God's character do you think are most underdeveloped in yourself?
3.The author argues that spiritual growth and emotional/psychological growth are not competing tracks — they are the same track. Does that idea feel liberating or unsettling to you? Why might some Christians resist connecting faith to psychology?
4.Cloud identifies four tasks that mature human beings need to develop: bonding, boundaries, sorting out good and bad, and becoming an adult. Which of these four areas sounds most immediately relevant to your own struggles?
5.The introduction sets up God as the ultimate healer who promises to complete his work (Philippians 1:6). How does thinking of healing as something God promises — rather than something you must achieve — change the way you approach this study?
6.Cloud suggests that many of our struggles (anxiety, loneliness, addiction, burnout) share a common root in blocked development. Has anyone ever helped you see a connection between your emotional struggles and your relational or spiritual history? What did that insight feel like?
7.As you begin this study, what is the one specific change you are most hoping to experience? Share it with your group (or write it in your journal) as a way of setting an intention and an accountability marker.
Closing Prayer
Lord, we come to this study carrying the gap between who we are and who you made us to be. We confess that we have sometimes tried to close that gap by trying harder, believing more correctly, or simply ignoring the pain. Today we open our hands and ask you to do what only you can do — complete the good work you began in us. As we work through these weeks, make us honest about our wounds and hopeful about your promises. You are the God who heals. We trust you. Amen.
