The most important thing about heaven, Alcorn insists, is not the place but the Person — and these chapters bring us to the glorious center of it all: seeing God face to face.
Discussion Questions
8 questions1.Alcorn calls the beatific vision — seeing God face to face — the supreme joy of heaven, the one thing that makes everything else what it is. He quotes Psalm 27:4: "One thing I ask: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord." Is this your supreme desire? If not, what does that reveal about where your heart is?
2.Alcorn notes that in the Old Testament, to see God's face meant death — and yet in the New Earth, seeing God face to face will be the central, unending joy of the redeemed (Revelation 22:4). What makes the difference? How does Christ make it possible for sinners to behold God without being destroyed?
a.How does this connect to the High Priest going behind the veil — and to the veil being torn at the crucifixion (Matthew 27:51)?
b.What does it say about the significance of the cross that it opens the way to the face of God?
3.Alcorn argues that our relationship with God in heaven will be personal and intimate, not merely awe-inspiring and distant — drawing on Jesus's prayer that we would be with Him where He is (John 17:24) and the image of God dwelling *with* His people (Revelation 21:3). What does it mean to you that God genuinely *wants* your company for eternity?
