One of the most transformative sections of the book, these chapters challenge the idea that heaven will be an endless passive worship service and replace it with a vision of joyful, meaningful, creative work and adventure.
Discussion Questions
8 questions1.Alcorn's central claim in this section is that work is not a consequence of the Fall — it was part of God's original design in the Garden (Genesis 2:15). How does this change your attitude toward work, both now and in eternity? Had you ever associated work with paradise before?
2.Alcorn argues that the parable of the minas/talents (Luke 19:11-27) teaches that faithfulness in this life directly determines our roles and responsibilities in the next. He takes seriously the idea that we will "reign" over cities on the New Earth. What is your reaction to the idea that eternity will be differentiated — that not everyone will have the same role or level of responsibility?
a.Does this motivate you, concern you, or both? Why?
b.How does the fact that every role in the kingdom will bring complete joy and satisfaction address potential concerns about inequality?
3.Alcorn imagines that on the New Earth we will engage in arts, sciences, music, architecture, exploration, athletics, and agriculture. What biblical basis does he offer for this expansive vision? Does it seem like speculation to you, or does it follow naturally from the kind of world Revelation 21–22 describes?
