When our carefully laid plans collapse, it can feel like God wasn't paying attention — or worse, that He changed His mind about us. This chapter challenges that assumption at its root.

1.Think about a plan you made — for your family, career, health, or relationships — that fell apart. What story were you telling yourself about the future that that plan was built on? What happened to that story when the plan failed?

2.Lysa describes the specific pain of having plans that seemed God-honoring fall apart — the confusion of doing the right things and still not getting the expected results. Have you experienced that particular kind of disappointment? How did it affect your faith?

3.She draws on the truth that God is never surprised by what surprises us — that our foiled plans do not catch Him off guard. Does that truth comfort you, or does it make you feel like He should have intervened? What does your reaction reveal about your picture of God?

a.Is there a difference between God knowing something will happen and God wanting it to happen?

b.How does that distinction affect your anger or confusion toward Him?

4.Lysa is careful to distinguish between God's sovereign plan and our preferred plan. What is the emotional work required to release "my plan" and genuinely open your hands to "His plan"? What makes that so hard?

5.She references Jeremiah 29:11 — one of the most quoted and sometimes most misapplied verses in the Bible. What does "plans to prosper you and not to harm you" mean in its original context of exile and waiting? How does that original context change the way you read it?

Lord, we confess that we often make plans and then ask You to bless them, rather than asking You to lead and then following. Forgive us for holding so tightly to our preferred futures that we miss what You are doing. Thank You that You are not scrambling to catch up with our foiled plans — You are already there. Help us to trust Your presence in the ruins of what we thought our lives would look like. Open our hands. Amen.
