The novel enters its most gothic phase — things happen in the house at night that Lowen cannot explain, and the paranoia ratchets up on every page. These chapters test the reader's grip on what is real.

8 questions

1.Lowen begins experiencing incidents at night — presences, sounds, and at least one terrifying physical encounter — that she cannot fully account for. How does Hoover keep the reader from settling on a single explanation for these events? What narrative techniques create and sustain that ambiguity?

2.The possibility that Verity may be more conscious and capable than she appears is increasingly foregrounded in these chapters. How does the novel use the unreliability of medical knowledge — what doctors can or cannot determine about neurological states — to keep that uncertainty alive?

3.Lowen's relationship with Jeremy deepens even as the danger in the house feels more present. Does the intensification of the romance feel like a natural response to fear and isolation, or does it strike you as a narrative device to raise the stakes? Can it be both?
