The novel delivers its most destabilizing development — and then asks you to sit with it. These chapters are where Hoover makes her boldest structural move, and where the conversation about what you believe is likely to become most heated.

1.Verity's death occurs in this section. How does Hoover write that scene — what is described, what is left out, and how is the ambiguity of what actually happened constructed? Who, if anyone, do you believe is responsible?

2.After Verity's death, Lowen discovers a letter — a second document in Verity's handwriting — that directly contradicts much of what the autobiography claimed. How did you react to this second document when you first read it? Did it immediately change your interpretation of the novel, or did it make you more suspicious?

3.The letter offers an alternative explanation: that the autobiography was not a confession but a work of dark fiction, a psychological exercise Verity used as a writer. Is that explanation plausible to you? What details from earlier in the novel could support it — and what details make it hard to fully accept?
