Yancey opens not with answers but with the raw, uneasy reality that pain raises questions most of us would rather avoid — this week, give yourself permission to sit with those questions.

Discussion Questions

7 questions

1.Yancey begins by acknowledging that books about pain and suffering are easy to dismiss until you actually need one. Has there been a moment in your own life when the question 'Where is God?' became urgent and personal rather than theoretical? What prompted it?

2.Yancey says he almost didn't write this book because he feared producing another round of glib, unsatisfying answers. What 'glib answers' have you heard — or perhaps given — when someone was suffering? Why do those answers often feel hollow to the person receiving them?

3.The book is organized around several distinct questions: Why does pain exist? What is God's role in it? How do we respond to others in pain? Which of these feels most pressing to you right now, and why?

4.Yancey distinguishes between the problem of pain as a philosophical puzzle and pain as a lived, embodied experience. Why does that distinction matter? How might it change the way we approach someone who is suffering?

5.Read Romans 8:18–28. Paul speaks of 'present sufferings' and a creation that 'groans.' How does this passage set up a biblical framework for thinking about pain — one that neither minimizes it nor treats it as the final word?

a.What does it mean to you that the Spirit 'intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express' (v. 26)?

b.How does verse 28 ('all things work together for good') sit with you? Does it comfort, frustrate, or confuse you? Be honest.

6.Yancey writes for people who are 'in the middle of' pain, not just looking back on it. If you are in a difficult season right now, what would you most need from a book — or a friend — that addresses your suffering?

7.What do you hope to gain from working through this book over the coming weeks? What fears or resistances do you bring to it?

Closing Prayer

Lord, we come to you with questions we are sometimes afraid to ask out loud. Like the psalmists, we want to be honest about the groaning inside us — the confusion, the anger, the grief. Thank you that you are not threatened by our questions. As we begin this study, give us the courage to go to uncomfortable places in our thinking, and give us the grace to hold each other's pain with care. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who is himself no stranger to suffering. Amen.
