Week 7: Chapter 6 — How People Respond to Pain

1.Yancey observes that two people can face identical suffering and respond in radically different ways — one grows, one collapses. What factors, in his analysis, most shape those different responses? Do you agree with his assessment?

2.Yancey describes the danger of what might be called 'victimhood' — where suffering becomes a person's entire identity and begins to define every relationship and every decision. Have you seen this pattern? What makes it so understandable, and yet so damaging?

3.Yancey also describes the opposite danger: spiritual stoicism, or refusing to acknowledge pain at all, treating it as something a 'strong Christian' should simply overcome. Where does this tendency come from, and what does it cost the person who adopts it?
