Before we can choose better relationships, we have to reckon honestly with the ones we've already had. This week's questions invite you to step back and take stock.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Cloud and Townsend open with the idea that relationships are the very foundation of our spiritual and emotional lives — that we were literally wired by God for connection. Does this ring true to your own experience? Why or why not?
2.Think of a relationship in your past that caused you real harm — where you felt judged, manipulated, controlled, or simply let down repeatedly. Without naming names, what was the pattern? What did you keep hoping would change?
3.The authors suggest that many of us repeat the same relational mistakes over and over, often without realizing it. Do you see any recurring patterns in your own history of friendships, romantic relationships, or work relationships?
4.Cloud and Townsend argue that being with unsafe people can damage not just our feelings but our very confidence, our ability to trust, and even our physical health. Does this feel like an overstatement, or have you seen it proven true in your own life or in someone you care about?
5.The book promises to address both sides of the relational equation: learning to pick safe people AND learning to become one ourselves. Which of those two feels more urgent to you right now — and which feels more uncomfortable?
a.Why do you think one feels more urgent or more uncomfortable than the other?
b.What would it mean to take both equally seriously?
6.The authors frame this as a deeply spiritual project, not merely a psychological one — they believe God Himself is the model of a safe person. What does it stir in you to think about God in those terms — as someone who is genuinely safe?
7.If a close friend asked you right now, 'Are you a safe person to be around?' — what would you honestly say? What evidence would you point to?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for creating us for connection — for designing us to need each other and to need You. We confess that many of us have been hurt in relationships, and some of us have done the hurting. As we begin this study, give us the courage to look honestly at our patterns, the humility to admit where we have chosen poorly or behaved unsafely, and the hope that things genuinely can change. You are a safe God — help us trust that truth more deeply as we go. Amen.
