Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.Cloud and Townsend describe the practice of empathy as central to becoming a safe person. Empathy means entering into another person's experience without judgment or immediate advice. How well do you practice this? What gets in the way for you — the urge to fix, to reassure, to redirect?

2.The authors argue that safe people respect boundaries — they do not pressure, guilt, or manipulate others into doing what they want. Think of the relationships in your life where you have the most power or influence. How well do you honor the other person's limits, even when it costs you something?

3.One mark of a safe person is the ability to apologize well — to say 'I was wrong' without immediately qualifying it, defending yourself, or turning it into a conversation about the other person's fault. When did someone last give you a genuine, unqualified apology? What did it do to you? When did you last give one?

a.What makes a genuine apology so difficult for most people?

b.How does the gospel free us to apologize without shame spiraling?
