Week 14: Chapter 13 — Belonging

Read Chapter 13 of Uninvited. Key Scripture: Ephesians 2:19 ("You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household.")

Lysa arrives at the destination the whole book has been pointing toward: true belonging. Not the counterfeit belonging we scramble for by fitting in, but the belonging that comes from being a member of God's household.

1.Lysa draws a crucial distinction between fitting in and belonging. Fitting in requires us to change ourselves to be accepted; belonging is an unconditional welcome into a home that was always ours. Which of those two have you been chasing most of your life?

2.She describes the two core fears that feed rejection-driven insecurity: the fear that you are not enough, and the fear that you are too much. Which of those two fears has been the louder voice in your life?

a.What situations tend to activate the "not enough" fear?

b.What situations tend to activate the "too much" fear?

c.How does the gospel speak to each of those fears specifically?

3.Ephesians 2:19 says we are "fellow citizens" and "members of God's household" — language that implies permanence, rights, and relationship. How does reading that verse as a statement about your current status (not just a future hope) change how you carry yourself today?

4.Lysa talks about belonging as something we have to practice receiving — we can be citizens and still act like strangers because we haven't learned to live from our belonging. Where do you act like a stranger in God's household?

5.She makes the point that real belonging to God's family should make us better at creating belonging for others — including the people who feel most excluded, most overlooked, most like the woman at the well or Leah in the field. Who in your life currently needs you to extend the belonging you have received?

Father, the word that undoes us is "household" — not just kingdom, but household. Not just subjects, but family. We confess that we have been chasing a counterfeit belonging our whole lives, one that requires us to shrink or perform or pretend. Thank You that You have already given us the real thing — we belong to You. Teach us to live from that, not toward it. And make us people who extend the belonging we have received to every person who comes within arm's reach. Amen.
