You Are Free by Rebekah Lyons
Week 3: Chapter 2 — Free to Feel
Read Chapter 2 of You Are Free. Primary passages: Psalm 34:18; John 11:35.
Many of us have been taught — implicitly or explicitly — that strong emotions are a sign of weak faith. This chapter challenges that assumption and invites you to feel what you actually feel in the presence of a God who already knows.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Rebekah challenges the idea that good Christians should always be joyful or 'fine.' Where did you learn that negative emotions were spiritually suspect? Was that message from family, church, culture — or all three?
2.She points to Jesus weeping at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35) even though He knew He was about to raise him. What does it tell you about God that He wept anyway? What does that mean for your own grief or sadness?
3.Rebekah is honest about her own battle with anxiety — describing it not as a lack of faith but as a wound that needed tending. How does framing anxiety or depression as a wound rather than a sin change the way you approach it in yourself or others?
