You Are Free by Rebekah Lyons
Week 8: Chapter 7 — Free to Forgive
Read Chapter 7 of You Are Free. Primary passages: Matthew 18:21–35; Colossians 3:13.
Forgiveness is one of the most talked-about and least-practiced aspects of the Christian life. Rebekah presses past the clichés to show that unforgiveness is ultimately a form of self-imprisonment — and that forgiving is a path to freedom for ourselves, not just for those who hurt us.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Rebekah distinguishes between forgiveness as a feeling (which may take time) and forgiveness as a decision (which we can make right now). Have you found that distinction helpful in your own experience, or does it still feel murky?
2.In the parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18), the servant who is forgiven an enormous debt immediately turns and refuses to forgive a tiny one. What does Jesus suggest this reveals about the servant's heart? What might it reveal about ours when we withhold forgiveness?
3.Rebekah is honest that some wounds are genuinely serious — betrayal, abuse, abandonment — and that forgiveness does not mean minimizing what happened or reconciling with every relationship. Where do you need that clarification? Is there a wound in your life you haven't forgiven because you're afraid forgiving it would mean pretending it didn't matter?
