8 questions1.Job is one of the most philosophically challenging books in the Bible. Cobble notes that God's response to Job from the whirlwind (Job 38–41) doesn't actually answer Job's "why" questions — instead, God responds with a cascade of "where were you?" questions about creation. What do you make of that response? Does it satisfy you — or frustrate you?
2.One of Cobble's consistent refrains is that God's character — His goodness, wisdom, power — is the answer to our suffering, even when specific answers aren't given. How does that idea sit with you? Is knowing who God is enough when you don't get an explanation?
a.Think of a season of suffering in your own life. Did knowing God's character help — or did you need (or expect) more than that?
b.How does Job's restoration at the end of the book fit into this? Is restoration always the shape of redemption?
3.Psalm 22 opens with "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" — the very words Jesus cries from the cross (Matthew 27:46). How does seeing this psalm in context — as a psalm of both abandonment and ultimate vindication — change the way you hear Jesus on the cross?
