Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.Isaiah 53 — the portrait of the "Suffering Servant" — is one of the most remarkable chapters in all of Scripture, written 700 years before Jesus. When you read it alongside the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion, what is your emotional and theological response? What does it say about God's sovereignty over the plan of redemption?

2.Cobble helps readers see that Isaiah contains both devastating judgment and breathtaking hope — sometimes in the same chapter. How do you hold those two things together? What does it tell you about God's character that He can be both the God of holy wrath and the God of tender comfort?

3.Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" — is one of the most quoted Bible verses in popular Christian culture. But Cobble and many Bible teachers point out it was spoken to people facing seventy years of exile in Babylon. How does knowing the original context change — or deepen — the way you hear and apply this promise?

a.Does the context make the promise more or less comforting to you? Why?

b.What does it say about God that His "plans for welfare" can include extended seasons of suffering and waiting?
