Before diving into Jennie's framework, take a moment to consider what you actually believe about your own emotions — are they trustworthy guides, dangerous liabilities, or something in between?

Discussion Questions

8 questions

1.Jennie opens the book by describing the cultural and even religious messages many of us have absorbed about emotions — things like "don't let your feelings get the best of you" or the implicit message that strong feelings are a sign of weak faith. Which of these messages have you heard most often, and where did they come from (family, church, culture)?

2.She makes a distinction between being "emotional" and being "emotionally healthy." In your own words, what is the difference? Do you tend to identify as an emotional person or as someone who keeps feelings at a distance?

3.Jennie is candid from the start about her own struggles with emotional avoidance. What does her honesty about her story stir up in you — relief, skepticism, curiosity? Why?

4.The publisher's description says many of us need to "unlearn damaging messages" about emotions. What is one specific message about feelings you received growing up that you suspect may need to be unlearned?

5.Jennie promises a five-step process that works "whether you self-identify as 'emotional' or not." Why is it significant that she frames the process as accessible to everyone, not just people who already feel their feelings freely?

6.The introduction sets up a tension: emotions can be overwhelming and misleading, AND they can be God-given signals that point us toward healing and connection. How have you experienced both sides of that tension in your own life?

7.Jennie weaves together neuroscience, biblical insight, and personal story throughout the book. Which of those three lenses are you most excited about, and which one feels most unfamiliar or challenging to engage?

8.What is the one emotional pattern — stuffing, overreacting, numbing, performing — that you most hope this book helps you address? Share as much as you feel comfortable sharing.

a.What do you think drives that pattern in you?

b.What has it cost you in your relationships with God or others?

Closing Prayer

Lord, we come to You already a little uncomfortable — because talking about feelings is hard, and being honest about them is even harder. Thank You that You are not surprised by anything we carry. Help us to unlearn the messages that have kept us from being emotionally honest with You and with the people we love. Give us courage this week to simply notice what we are feeling, without judgment. We trust that You made us with hearts and minds and souls, and that You are not afraid of any of it. Amen.
