One of the most important things we can give our children is a sense of their own personhood — and a clear understanding of how their choices connect to consequences. This chapter is both practically rich and deeply convicting.

1.Cloud and Townsend describe the parent's primary task as "working themselves out of a job" — gradually releasing control and responsibility to the child as they mature. Does this match how you were raised? How does it compare to your instincts as a parent or mentor?

Father, You parent us with perfect wisdom — setting limits that protect us, allowing consequences that teach us, and pursuing us with a love that never gives up. We confess that we often parent out of our own anxiety or guilt rather than out of our children's genuine needs. Help us to love our children enough to disappoint them sometimes, to hold firm when they push, and to trust that the structures we set today are building the character they will need tomorrow. And for those of us still being parented — help us receive the grace of limits with gratitude. Amen.
