Boundaries by Henry Cloud
Week 4: Chapter 3 — Boundary Problems
Read Chapter 3 of Boundaries by Henry Cloud and John Townsend.
Not all boundary problems look the same — and in this chapter, the authors introduce a helpful taxonomy of the ways our limits break down. As you read, try to honestly identify which patterns show up most in your own life.
Discussion Questions
7 questions1.Cloud and Townsend describe four basic boundary problem styles: Compliants, Avoidants, Controllers, and Nonresponsives. In your own words, what distinguishes each type?
2.The "Compliant" person says yes when they mean no, often out of fear of another's anger or abandonment. The "Controller" doesn't respect other people's boundaries, often without realizing it. Which of these two patterns do you think is more socially rewarded in Christian communities — and why might that be dangerous?
3.The "Avoidant" struggles to ask for help or receive care from others — they have boundaries with receiving, not just giving. Have you encountered this pattern? Why might someone find it harder to receive than to give?
